Grimaud near St Tropez
Les Bastides Apartments , Grimaud, are quietly situated in the Maures mountain range on the cote d'Azur, away from the hustle and bustle of the coast yet only 3 km from the beaches of the gulf of St Tropez, 4 km from Port Grimaud, and 10 km from Ste Maxime.  The Cote d'Azur is well known for its long sandy beaches, and warm, sunny climate all year round , ideal for a spring, early summer or autumn holiday.

Les Bastides is a small gated development  of 56 new privately owned  apartments with swimming pool. The Bastides are built in the traditional style of provencal farm houses and are set into the hillside with views to Grimaud and  its fortified ruined castle, fields of olive trees, vines and lavender, and rolling hills covered in pine trees and the occasional tantalising glimpse from some parts of the gulf St Tropez.

We stayed in Les Bastides in one of the busiest weeks at the end of July 2007 and found it to be an oasis of peace. The apartments are well spaced and are designed so that you are unaware of other visitors. As the apartments are set into the hillside they catch the welcome sea breeze which cools the heat of the summer.

The pool is open from 10am to 8pm. We had a dip at different times of the day but never found it crowded.  The pool is unsupervised and so parents do need to look after their children. It is relatively shallow with steps the breadth of one end and at the other end the floor slopes upwards. Maximum depth in the centre is approximately 4'6", so is not suitable for diving.
There is a childrens' paddling pool.

A free shuttle bus in season will take you to the beach at Port Grimaud, and this does save the hassle of driving and  parking. Should you tire of the beach then explore the marina village of Port Grimaud, which is just set back from the beach  . Explore the walkways and squares lined with shops and restaurants, take a boat trip to the islands or hire an electric motor boat to exploe the village via its canals.

Take the car and there are many other beaches to explore along the coast in both directions, including the sandy beaches along the Baie de Pampelonne coast.
Click here for a guide to some of the beaches.

See Map of St Tropez region,

From Les Bastides, it is just a kilometre to Grimaud, which is a  fascinating hill top village with narrow stone streets, houses dripping with bouganvillea, Romanesque chapels and a tasteful sprinkling of restaurants, ice cream shops, museums and speciality shops. Explore the ruins of the medival ruined castle and admire the superb views all around of the Maures mountains and the gulf of St Tropez.  Every Tuesday evening in season sees free street entertainment, topped off with an open air concert in the grounds of the castle (18 euros in 2007).

St Tropez, originally a small fishing village is now well know for its harbour lined with painters,  luxury yatchs and designer shops and all sorts of restaurants. Here you will find an eclectric mixture of tourists and the "beautiful people", but be aware that the roads into and out of St Tropez can become very congested in season. It is possible though, even in high season to  time your visit to avoid the queues. Another alternative is to take the launch from Port Grimaud.

Nearby are some of the most delightful villages in France - Ramatuelle, Grimaud and Gassin, voted one of France's most beautiful villages. See map.

There are marinas at Port Grimaud, Cogolin, Sainte-Maxime, whilst Nice, Monaco, Cannes and Antibes can be visited on a day trip.

There are vineyards to explore, most with "degustations" and each local village has a market on a different day of the week.

There are numerous golf courses and tennis courts in the vicinity. The reception at Les Bastides can advise.
Boat trips with Bateaux Vertes up and down the coast and over to the islands of Porquerolles can be booked at Reception at reduced rates.

8 new Bastides or provencal houses, completed in summer 2006 are built into the hillside, staggered and well spaced to give a feeling of privacy. Each Bastide is divided  into 6 apartments, with attractive living room with large patio windows onto the south/south east facing terrace with views over the rolling pine clad hillsides. The gound floor apartments have a small natural garden,
All apartments have air conditioning in the living room and main bedroom. The second bedroom in the larger apartments is at the rear and dosn't catch the sun and so remains cool without air conditioning.

There is a  non-heated swimming pool with paddling pool, open from mid-May to the end of September, fitness room, launderette (with supplement), free outdoor car parks. On our visit at the end of July 2007, we found the pool pleasantly warm and not at all crowded and plenty of parking space.
There is a reception on site, with emergency numbers, should you need them.
